About T2 Biosystems
T2 Biosystems is an early-stage company intent on revolutionizing diagnostic medicine by providing immediate, accurate testing for nearly any health condition, in nearly any setting. We are bringing about this “distributive diagnostics” revolution by miniaturizing proven magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology, combined with groundbreaking nanotechnology.
T2 Biosystems' exceptional scientific founders include Robert Langer, Ph.D, and Ralph Weissleder MD, Ph.D., among others.
T2 Biosystems' technology, called the MRD™ technology, has been proven effective in laboratories of the T2 Biosystems founders. It will be available to hospitals, diagnostic laboratories and medical offices in two to three years. Longer term, T2 will offer miniaturized wearable or handheld versions of the technology, which will allow individual consumers to continuously monitor their own health conditions.
The technology is positioned to become the dominant diagnostic platform of the future.
The Opportunity
T2 Biosystems comes at a time when individualized diagnostic testing and portable, point-of-care and home testing devices are on the rise. Traditional laboratories still set the standard for accuracy, but can take hours, days or weeks to return results. And while traditional MRI is extremely useful for full-body scans, it requires that patients lie still in large chambers, which have limited availability and are too expensive, complicated and cumbersome for most diagnostic uses.
Currently, however, portable and home devices are limited and suffer from several drawbacks. While faster, they often lack reliability. Many analytes (markers for particular conditions) are not currently addressed by portable systems. No single platform is universally applicable across disease states or markets. By overcoming these and other limitations, T2 Biosystems will make portable and home diagnostics, already a growing business, the new standard in medicine.
Current Status
T2 Biosystems' initial system is under development by company scientists, who expect to embark on clinical testing and to introduce their first products in the near future.
The company’s scientists are also developing miniaturized magnetic resonance technology for eventual use in handheld and even wearable and implantable devices. Such implantable devices would not require separate tissue samples and would simplify the diagnostic process.
Product Pipeline
T2 Biosystems is pursuing a balanced pipeline approach that includes both near- and long-term products.
Near term
In the near term, the company will offer bench-top systems for use in hospital, laboratory and medical office settings. T2 Biosystems' first products will focus on the area of infectious disease and will be used to rapidly determine the nature and status of infections.
T2 Biosystems scientists will simultaneously be expanding our test menu by developing particles for use in detecting additional analytes.
Long term
Longer term, the company will offer much smaller, more portable instruments for use wherever immediate medical decision-making is key. Such settings would include not only hospitals, clinics, and doctors’ offices—but also ambulances, schools, and military situations.
T2 Biosystems will ultimately offer tiny devices for wearable, handheld or even implanted applications.
